Gold Coast mayor Tom Tate promises new era of co-operation between governments

MAYOR Tom Tate has used his second term “inauguration address” to pitch a new era of consultation between three levels of government.

In his “inaugural address”, Cr Tate set the goal of cementing the Gold Coast as a “global destination”

“To create new opportunities beyond the traditional surf, sand and theme parks,” he said.

Opportunities in cultural tourism, medical tourism, sports tourism, cruise and education tourism that truly diversify our tourism economy.

“To advance this diversification we have to work with the state to get it done.

“We are embarking on an exciting chapter in the history of our great city.

Cr Tate said the council would need to work closely with the state and federal governments.

“I say to you, take politics out for the betterment of our city,” he said.

“We need to strike a deal with the state and federal governments that advances key civic projects.

“These are civic projects that have the capacity to transform us into a 21st century city where creativity and infrastructure deliver innovation and drive economic growth, local jobs and continued prosperity for the entire region.”
